Athens, Ga., string band Curley Maple, which is already familiar to Dahlonega audiences, has elicited appreciation from fans of all styles of acoustic music for its inspired embrace of traditional fiddle music and contemporary styles.
“Violinist extraordinaire David Blackmon…is without question one of
Athens’ best known and respected talents.”
- Chris Starrs, Athens Banner-Herald (May 11, 2008)
“They create a comfortable, back-porch sound that gets warmer and more
inviting with each listen…get acquainted with one of the premiere,
genuine ‘folk music’ groups in town.”
- Gordon Lamb, Flagpole Magazine (June 18, 2008)
The renowned and creative playing of ace fiddler David Blackmon is the driving force behind Curley Maple. He is complemented by the tight harmony singing of Noel Blackmon and Christian Lopez who join him on guitar, mandolin, and bouzouki. The group is all held down by upright bassist Chris Enghauser's prodigious skills and groove. An unconventional "trad.band," Curley Maple's figures drone and swirl, nodding to both old and new and branching across time with a blend of old-time and Celtic fiddle tunes, songs, ballads and original compositions.
