Led by veteran musician and ace fiddler David Blackmon, Athens, Georgia’s, Curley Maple brings its unique brand of neo-traditional string band music to new audiences with each season. While paying homage to old-time and bluegrass traditions, Curley Maple’s performances bring to bear the band’s varied influences from folk, Celtic, jamgrass, jazz, rock and even classical music. Their debut CD, Shawneetown, is a spirited and toe-tapping gem that never stays in one place too long, but lingers where it ought to. Rare and uncommon songs and tunes are the stuff of Shawneetown, as vocal harmonies, bowed bass, mandolins, old-time guitar and even bouzouki fill in the spaces around David’s accomplished fiddling.
Curley Maple formed in 2008 and includes: David Blackmon, considered one of the pioneers of jamgrass whose fiddling has graced the records and performances of many popular acts, is best known for his fiddle, mandolin and guitar playing in country music legend Jerry Reed’s band, as well as his extensive recording and touring experience with the elite jam band, Widespread Panic; Noel Blackmon, a talented multi-instrumentalist musician and singer who is at home with many genres of music and song; Chris Enghauser, an accomplished jazz and classical bassist whose powerful double bass creatively bows fiddle tunes, swings or thumps out grooves interchangeably; and Christian Lopez, a multi-instrumentalist and skilled singer-songwriter with a passion for traditional music and songs about dead folks.
