Old Time Banjo - Tom Ryan
Designed for those banjo players who have mastered the basic "bum- ditty" pattern of old time banjo picking.
We'll look at various forms of back up on the banjo, learn new right hand and left hand techniques, and phrasing. Learn how to use basic chords and left hand positions, and how to pick up a new tune or song on the fly. Learn new practice techniques and goal setting, and learn a new song or two as well.
Back in his younger days, Tom moved into a rooming house, and found a banjo in a closet of the room he was renting, his fate was sealed. Tom soon saw a fellow playing clawhammer banjo and immediately switched from bluegrass style to old time.
He played with the "Frozen String Band", in Washington State and later traveled with the "Famous Potatoes",obviously out of Idaho.
Tom moved to Georgia in 1980 and eventually hooked up with the "Georgia Mudcats".
Besides playing the banjo, Tom enjoys making banjos in his shop.
He was the Arkansas state champion and 3 time Georgia state champion.
The location will be St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church across from Hancock Park.
