The Solstice Sisters

The Solstice Sisters are Maggie Hunter, Susan Staley, and Anna Durden -- three women harmonizing old time country ballads, traditional folk and '40s styled swing. They are known not only for their lovely three-part harmonies, but also for their spontaneous and energetic live shows.  Also in the band are Lee Hiers on Dobro and Mike Harrison on stand up bass.

Solstice Sisters

Some of you may recognize Maggie Hunter's name and voice from the radio show "Just Folks" aired on WUGA 91.7 FM, which comes on right after Prairie Home Companion and plays a variety of folk and traditional music. Maggie was also in the popular Athens Bluegrass band, The Warblers. Susan Staley also plays in the band The Hobohemians and for the last 15 years has been the host for the Athens Folk Music & Dance Society's monthly music show, The Hoot. Anna Hiers has been in the Athens music scene since the 1980s, singing in the band Rhythm Method.   The guys are both veteran bluegrassers.  Mike was in The BTUs and In Cahoots, while Lee has played in several great bands including Bluegrass Underground.  They both play in Americana band Driftwood.

It was way back in 1994 that the three women first got together to work up a few Christmas songs for a holiday event. This was the beginning of The Solstice Sisters and also the beginning of a long lasting friendship and partnership in song. In 1999 they released their album, "Holiday Music From Around the World", which is now in its second pressing.  And then after nine years of fans asking for a recording they could listen to the rest of the year, the sisters released their second album entitled simply "The Rest of the Year".  It features David Blackmon on fiddle and mandolin, Dick Daniels on stand up bass and Tommy Jordan on claw hammered banjo, and it is a mix of traditional old time and bluegrass styled ballads and swing songs and also features some original songs from the Sisters.  The Solstice Sisters have performed at many festivals in Northeast Georgia, sharing the stage with Doc Watson, Doyle Larson & Quicksilver, Ralph Stanley & His Clinch Mountain Boys and many more. They have performed at The Mountain Music and Medicine Show, a live radio show up in Dahlonega; the live show The Magnolia Music & Medicine Show in Eastwood; at WUGA's radio broadcasts "Once In A Blue Moon" and "It's Friday," and were featured on the statewide public radio show "Georgia Gazette".
