For the traditional music lovers who flock to Dahlonega during Bear on the Square, The Historic Holly Theater is producing its second edition of Smoke on the Mountain, a hysterical musical tale set in the 1930's in the rural south. Traditional string instruments and gospel music are a prominent part of the production. You'll hear almost 30 gospel tunes—a pleasant mixture of energetic rousing numbers, plaintive hymns, and soulful praise songs. Songs vary from the well known, such as "Amazing Grace" and "I'll Fly Away," to the more obscure ones, such as "Filling Station" and "Christian Cowboy."
The play introduces the singing Sanders family, who perform their traditional and bluegrass gospel songs for the members of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, NC. Pastor Oglethorpe welcomes the family to the church, where their individual stories and beliefs are shared during the concert. The audience serves as the members of the congregation.
The Historic Holly Theater is a town landmark and a beautifully restored building. In addition to comedies, dramas and musicals produced by the very active and talented Holly Theater Company throughout the year, the Holly hosts concerts and many special events. No seat is more than twenty feet from the action, so patrons don't miss anything. The Holly is located one block from the Public Square, home of our festival.
